Here at Concilium we consider sport to be a large part of our company culture and a background in sport to be an essential quality that we look for in our graduates.

But why is an active lifestyle so important for improving workplace performance?

Looking back over our health and well-being series at the start of the year, we’ve spent a lot of time looking into the importance of eating the right foods and how this can consequently improve memory, concentration and energy levels. But, it’s also crucial to factor in the effects of a fit and active lifestyle when judging how to improve office productivity.

Research into the impact of sport on the workplace found that sport can have a positive impact on boosting morale and improving mood, motivation and productivity in the working environment - with nearly 50% of employees saying that sporting success made them more productive in their jobs.

The personality traits that athletes adopt can also be directly applicable for influencing behaviour and consequently developing workplace success.

Active lifestyle 

How an active lifestyle positively impacts productivity in the workplace:

Boosting energy levels

Regular exercise increases the blood flow to the body and improves cardiovascular health and fitness. This allows more blood, oxygen and nutrients to get to muscle tissue in the body – improving their ability to produce more energy.

Relieving stress

Exercise releases endorphins, which has been shown to be effective in elevating your mood and reducing the effects of stress and anxiety.

Improving brain health and memory

The increase in heart rate caused by exercise increases the flow of blood and oxygen to the brain, consequently improving brain function and protecting memory and thinking skills. Exercise can also stimulate the production of hormones that can enhance the growth of brain cells.


While sports can bring a great sense of achievement and enjoyment to many, the effects of injury and losing games/competitions can result in players being put into a downward spiral. Having the ability to bounce back after a relegation or a broken bone shows key strength and flexibility, which is needed in the ever-changing world of business.


Staff who participate in sports naturally have a strong drive and determination to win and will push themselves to achieve above and beyond that of their competitors.


Being able to work efficiently with others and putting the right people forward for the job, ahead of your own needs, is essential for the growth of a company. Not forgetting, one of the most important qualities of a good leader is being able to bring people and their ideas together to build a successful brand.
