The Benefits of Doing an Internship

Invaluable experience and no permanent commitment - what's not to love?

Career Tips

Looking to do an internship and not sure if it’s the right path for you? We’ve listed our top 4 benefits of why an internship can be great news for your career…

1. The window of opportunity

Internships provide a perfect opportunity to get your foot in the door and to see how different areas of a business works. You get the chance to test the water and, not only discover what you enjoy, but also learn what you’re good at; allowing you to explore various options without the commitment of a permanent role.

2. Enhancing your CV

Adding another string to your bow will only further develop your CV and boost your chances of landing your perfect job. Whether it be as little as two weeks or as long as six months, all experience is valuable and having this on your CV will highlight your skills and understanding of an industry to prospective employers.

With jobs becoming increasingly competitive, it’s important to get involved with anything that will make your CV stand out in the crowd.

3. Networking

The great thing about an internship is that you get to rub shoulders with industry professionals and get a feel for what life is really like as an expert in the respective field. It can also be a great opportunity to understand where your colleagues have struggled or succeeded and see if they have any advice on how best to prepare yourself for a career in that role.

If you’re a University student taking on an internship in-between studying, this is the perfect time to ask questions and get advice from professionals, which could enhance your academic work.

TOP TIP: Remember to try your hardest to impress your colleagues – you never know when they might they might be able to recommend you for a role!

4. The experience of living and working abroad

Interning in a foreign country provides excellent opportunities for personal and professional growth. Alongside gaining invaluable business insights and working experience, you also get the chance to improve foreign language skills, understand a different culture and expand your network globally.

This week we will sadly be saying goodbye to our own intern, James Osborne, who will be returning the University of Nottingham this week to continue his Mathematics studies.

Here’s what James had to say about his own internship experience:

“My internship at Concilium Search has been an exciting, eye opening and unforgettable experience. I have had the chance to work on live vacancies from the get-go, which have enabled me to improve my skills and confidence tremendously.
Concilium has offered me a great stepping stone into the recruitment industry and I am very much looking forward to (hopefully) working alongside the team in the future. The office has an amazing buzz every day and, with helpful and experienced consultants around you, you’re never left feeling alone."

Concilium Search is a great company to learn and grow with.
